This is the engineering project of a smart light pole that wasn't satisfied with being just a street lamp. It wanted to cool off, to sense, to protect—and to do it all with style and smarts. Welcome to BOSUN Lighting's custom smart pole project in Saudi Arabia—a unique endeavor born from climate, creativity, and collaboration.

Project Background: A Commercial Jewel by the Sea

The project was set along a coastal commercial development in Saudi Arabia, a region known for its:
Extreme heat—summer temperatures often exceed 45°C
High humidity and salt air, especially near the Red Sea
Rapidly expanding smart city vision, where intelligent street lighting system projects are reshaping infrastructure
A preference for premium, multi-functional urban infrastructure that complements both function and form
The client's vision was clear: build a lighting system that not only fits into the intelligent city blueprint but also tackles thermal discomfort for pedestrians in outdoor leisure zones.
So the requirement came:
"Can you integrate fans into your smart light poles?"
Not just any fans—but durable, outdoor-grade fans that could operate under intense heat and keep seaside visitors cool.

Listening, Designing, Dreaming for the Best Smart Light Poles

At first, we were surprised. We've done smart poles with surveillance, sensors, LED screens, charging ports, Wi-Fi modules—but fans? That was new.
Still, we listened. We imagined. We ran our fingers along our usual pole structures and asked ourselves:
"Can I carry a fan without falling? Can I power it safely? Can I stay cool without overheating myself?"
Together with the client, we:
Identified high-traffic areas near food courts, benches, and event spaces needing airflow
Analyzed temperature data and peak pedestrian hours
Studied wind direction, humidity patterns, and structural wind-load impact
We knew it wasn't just about attaching a fan. It was about integrating a new function without compromising on stability, energy, aesthetics, or lifespan.

Challenges & Engineering Breakthroughs

This project pushed us outside the standard template. We had to rethink how a street light pole behaves:

Current Progress & What's Next

The prototype units have been approved, and production is underway. On-site installations are scheduled for Q4, with live testing of the intelligent street lighting system through the plaza's IoT Smart City Control System platform.
They're preparing to arrive.
